Families (Benson, Elizabeth G 1808)


Elizabeth G. Benson was the daughter of Richard Allen Benson and Sarah Jones. Richard Allen Benson was born on September 12, 1782 in North Carolina. Sarah was born on May 2, 1787 in North Carolina. Elizabeth G. Benson was born on October 20, 1808 in Tennessee or Springfield, Robertson County, Kentucky. Elizabeth went by the nickname of Betsy, when she was a child. We don’t know what the G stood for, in her name. Elizabeth married Josiah Mason on February 16, 1831 in Tennessee. Elizabeth and Josiah were married by his father, the Reverend Jesse Mason. Josiah and Elizabeth, then moved their family, along with the extended family, to Boone Township, Greene County, Missouri, in about 1837. Later, they moved the Mason family to Bois D’Arc Township, Greene County, Missouri. Josiah and Elizabeth were the parents, of at least nine children.

The first child, born to Josiah Mason and Elizabeth G. Benson was Angeline Minerva Mason. She was born on April 5, 1833 in Tennessee. Angeline was called Minnie, which is short for Minerva, her middle name, as a child. She married Josiah Jackson West on January 1, 1852 in Boone Township, Greene County, Missouri. We don’t know if Angeline Minerva, and her husband Josiah Jackson were the parents, of any children. At the time of their marriage, Josiah Jackson went by the nickname, of Jack. Angeline died on April 22, 1927 in Bois D’Arc Township, Greene County, Missouri. She was buried at Prospect Cemetery, Bois D’Arc Township, Greene County, Missouri. She was ninety six years old, when she died. We have no other information of the life, death or burial of Angeline Minerva Mason.

Henry Sugg Mason was the second child, born to Josiah Mason and Elizabeth G. Mason. He was born in 1836 in Tennessee. He was known as Hank as a nickname. Henry married Mary Louise Mc Spradden or Mac Spradden on December 8, 1864 in Boone County, Greene County, Missouri. Mary Louise was called Mary Lou, all of her life. We don’t know, if Henry and Mary Louise were the parents, of any children. Henry died in 1901 in Boone Township, Greene County, Missouri. He was buried at the Squibb Cemetery, Springfield, Greene County, Missouri. We have no additional details of the life of Henry Sugg Mason’s life, death or burial.

Josiah Mason and Elizabeth G. Benson’s third child was Joseph A. Mason. He was born in 1838 in Boone Township,
Greene County, Missouri. Joseph was called Joe as a nickname, as a youth. We don’t know who Joseph married, or who they were married. We don’t know if Joseph and his wife were the parents of any children. We though maybe he died as a child; but we found no reference of, that event either. We have no further knowledge of the life, death or burial of Joseph A. Mason.

The fourth child, born to Josiah Mason and Elizabeth G. Benson was Amanda Harriett Mason. As a child, her nickname was Hattie. A nickname for Harriett. She was born on September 10, 1840 in Boone Township, Greene County, Missouri. Amanda Harriett married John Harrison West on July 27, 1862 near Boone Township, Greene County, Missouri. We don’t know, if Amanda Harriett and her husband John Harrison were the parents, of any children. Amanda Harriett died on February 4, 1904 in Bois D’Arc Township, Greene County, Missouri. She was buried at Prospect Cemetery, Bois D’Arc Township, Greene County, Missouri. Amanda Harriett or Hattie was sixty three years old, when she died. We have no other details of Amanda Harriett Mason’s life, death or burial.

Mary Elizabeth Mason was the fifth child, born to Josiah Mason and Elizabeth G Benson. Mary Elizabeth was given the nickname of Polly. She was born on May 2, 1842 in Boone Township, Greene County, Missouri. Mary Elizabeth married James Knox Polk Duncan on December 28, 1865 in Greene County, Missouri. Mary Elizabeth’s Husband, James, was known as Jimmy, at the time of their marriage. We don’t have a date for his birth or his death. James is listed as a soldier in the Union Army, during the Civil War. When the war ended; he went home and married Mary Elizabeth. Once they were married, Mary Elizabeth and her husband, James moved to Ash Grove, Greene County, Missouri. We don’t know, if Mary Elizabeth and her husband were the parents, of any children. She died on April 20, 1940 in Ash Grove, Greene County, Missouri. Mary Elizabeth was buried at Johns Chapel Cemetery, Ash Grove, Greene County, Missouri. She was ninety seven years old, when she died. We have no further knowledge of the life, death or burial of Mary Elizabeth Mason.

Josiah Mason and Elizabeth G. Benson’s sixth child, was Sarah Benson Mason. Sarah was known as Sally, all of her life. She was born in 1844 in Boone Township, Greene County, Missouri. Sarah married Cyrus G. Starkey on May 5, 1861 in Boone Township, Greene County, Missouri. He was born in 1837 in the state of Ohio. They were the parents of eight children, of which we know. Sarah’s husband, Cyrus died as she was expecting her eighth child. During a bad storm, he was telling the farm hands, to get the cows into the barn, from an upstairs window; when he was stuck by lightening. Cyrus G. Starkey died on June 27, 1879 in Severy, Greenwood County, Kansas. Sarah buried her husband in Severy, Greenwood County, Kansas. She had several small children, and had to give up the farm in Kansas. Sarah moved her family back to Springfield, Greene County, Missouri. She died in 1885 in Springfield, Greene County, Missouri. Sarah out lived her husband, Cyrus by about six years. She died at the age, of forty one years old. We have no other details of Sarah Benson Mason’s life, death or burial.

The seventh child, born to Josiah Mason and Elizabeth G. Benson was Mourning A. Mason. Mourning A. was born in 1846 in Boone Township, Greene County, Missouri. She was known as Molly, as a child. Mourning A. died as an infant in 1847 in Boone Township, Greene County, Missouri. She was buried on the home place, in Boone Township, Greene County, Missouri. We don’t know how she died. We have no further information, about the life, death or burial of Mourning A. Mason.

James Jasper Mason was the eighth child, born to Josiah Mason and Elizabeth G. Benson. He was born in 1848 in Boone Township, Greene County, Missouri. James held the nickname of Jimmy, though out his childhood. James married Elizabeth A. B. Julian on April 6, 1873 in Greene County, Missouri. We don’t Know, if James Jasper and his wife, Elizabeth were the parents, of any children. He Died on August 3, 1936 in Bois D’Arc Township, Greene County, Missouri. James was buried at Prospect Cemetery, Bois D’Arc Township, Greene County, Missouri. He Was about eighty eight years old, when he died. We have no other details, of James Jasper Mason’s life, death or burial.

Josiah Mason and Elizabeth G. Benson’s ninth child born, was Martha W. Mason. She was born on September of 1850, in Bois D’Arc Township, Greene County, Missouri. Martha’s nickname was Patsy, as a baby. Martha died, as an infant, in 1851 in Bois D’Arc Township, Greene County, Missouri. She was buried at Squibb Cemetery, Campbell Township, Greene County, Missouri. Later, Campbell Township became Springfield, in Greene County, Missouri. We have no additional knowledge of the life, death or burial of Martha W. Mason.

Elizabeth G. Benson died in September of 1850 in Bois D’Arc Township, Greene County, Missouri. She was buried at Squibb Cemetery, Campbell Township, Greene County, Missouri. Campbell Township, later became Springfield, Greene County, Missouri. We believe Elizabeth died in child birth. She died with the birth of her ninth child, Martha W. Mason. After Elizabeth died, her husband, Josiah Mason married again. His second wife was Malinda Murray. They were married on December 5, 1853. Malinda was born in 1820 in Tennessee. Her first husband was H. G. Leeper. We have no further information on Elizabeth G. Benson’s Life, death or burial.
