Families (Luman, Eliza 1821)


Eliza Luman was the daughter of John Luman and Mary. John Luman was born in November 30, 1793 in Allegany County, Maryland. Mary’s nickname was Polly throughout her life. Polly was born in 1799 in Kentucky. Eliza Luman was born on June 17, 1821 in Lewis County, Kentucky. Eliza Luman moved with her family in 1828 from Lewis County, Kentucky to Edwardsville, Madison County, Illinois. The Luman family were Presbyterians.

Eliza Luman married William Applegate Lanterman on January 3, 1839 in Edwardsville, Madison County, Illinois. William and Eliza were the parents of ten children. The first of those children was Mary Anne Lanterman. She was always called Polly Anne, as a nickname. Polly Anne was born on June 6, 1840 in Fort Russell Township, Madison County, Illinois. Polly Anne Lanterman married William Anderson Smith on February 8, 1860 in Moro, Madison County, Illinois. This was the place, where they made their new home. William and Polly Anne were the parents of twelve children, that we know of. As they got older, they sold their farm in Moro, Madison County, Illinois. They, then, moved to Sapulpa, Creek County, Oklahoma in 1889. They were leaders in their community in Illinois and in Oklahoma. William was first postmaster and planned postal routes in Sapulpa and in Creek County, Oklahoma. They donated the first school house. Polly Anne was the first teacher, until a permanent one could be found. William and Polly Anne started efforts to help the poor and many other causes. Polly Anne Lanterman died on December 7, 1905 in Sapulpa, Creek County, Oklahoma. She was buried in Sapulpa, Creek County, Oklahoma. Polly Anne was 65 years old, when she died. William, her husband out lived her by eight years.

Malinda Lanterman was the second child born to William Applegate Lanterman and Eliza Luman. Malinda was born in 1842 in Fort Russell Township, Madison County, Illinois. Malinda’s nickname, as a child, was Milly. She married Steven Burley Waples in Fort Russell Township, Madison County, Illinois. We don’t have a date for their marriage. Steven was a farmer by profession. Malinda died in 1920. We don’t know where she died or where she was buried. Malinda was seventy eight years old, when she died.

The third child born to William Applegate Lanterman and Eliza Luman was Sophia Lanterman. She was born in 1844 in Fort Russell Township, Madison County, Illinois. We don’t know who Sophia married. We don’t know when or where they were married. We have no further record of Sophia’s life, death or burial.

William Applegate Lanterman and Eliza Luman’s fourth child was Daniel Webster Lanterman. Daniel was born in 1846 in Fort Russell Township, Madison County, Illinois. He died of scarlet fever, as an infant in 1851 in Fort Russell Township, Madison County, Illinois. Daniel was buried in Fort Russell Township, Madison County, Illinois. He was about five years old, when he died.

Harriett Lanterman was the fifth child born to William Applegate Lanterman and Eliza Luman. She was born in 1848 in Fort Russell Township, Madison County, Illinois. Harriett was a seamstress by trade. She married Edward Calvin Drennan in Fort Russell Township, Madison County, Illinois. We don’t have a date for their marriage. We have no record of any children from the marriage. We have no additional details of Harriett’s life, death or burial.

The sixth child born to William Applegate Lanterman and Eliza Luman was George Washington Lanterman. He was born in 1850 in Fort Russell Township, Madison County, Illinois. George died in 1852 in Fort Russell Township, Madison County, Illinois. He was buried in Fort Russell Township, Madison County, Illinois. We don’t know how he died. George was only about two years old, when he died.

William Applegate Lanterman and Eliza Luman’s seventh child was Martha Lanterman. Martha’s nickname was Patsy, as a child. She was born in 1853 in Fort Russell Township, Madison County, Illinois. We don’t know who Martha married. We have no information of where or when they were married. We have no futher details of Martha’s life, death or burial.

William Henry Lanterman was the eight child born to William Applegate Lanterman and Eliza Luman. William was called Billy, as a youth. He was born in 1856 in Fort Russell Township, Madison County, Illinois. William was a farmer, merchant and store owner. He married Virginia Russell in Fort Russell Township, Madison County, Illinois. She was called Jenny, thoughout her life. We don’t know when they were married. We don’t know if they were the parents of any children. We have no other record of William’s life, death or burial.

The ninth child born to William Applegate Lanterman and Eliza Luman was Edward Allen Lanterman. He was born on June 8, 1860 in Fort Russell Township, Madison County, Illinois. He was known as Eddie, in his childhood. Edward married Elizabeth Belk in Madison County, Illinois. We don’t have a date for their marriage. Edward was a farmer by profession. We have no further information of the life, death or burial of Edward Allen Lanterman.

William Applegate Lanterman and Eliza Luman’s tenth child was John Burley Lanterman. John was called Johnny, as a child. He was born in 1863 in Fort Russell Township, Madison County, Illinois. John was a farmer, by trade. He married Alice. We don’t know her last name. They were married in Fort Russell Township, Madison County, Illinois. We don’t know when they were married. We don’t know if they were the parents, of any children. John Burley Lanterman died in 1891 in Madison County, Illinois. He was buried in Madison County, Illinois. John was only about 28 years old, when he died. We don’t know how he died. We have no additional details of his life, death or burial.

Eliza Luman died in 1903 in Moro, Madison County, Illinois. She was buried at Moro Cemetery, Moro, Madison County, Illinois. Eliza was about 82 years old, when she died. She outlived her husband, William by about 19 years. We don’t know how she died.
