William Mearns was born on the Sixth day of March, in 1747, at Ocheltree, Ayrshire, in Scotland. and died on the Twenty-sixth day of March, in 1828, at Ochiltree, Ayrshire, in Scotland. He was the son of George Mearns, who was born on the twenty-ninth day of October, in 1711, at Ochiltree, Ayrshire, in Scotland and Mary Murdoch, who was born in 1716, in Scotland.

William Mearns was married to Jean Tennant, on the Fifteenth day of November, in 1777, at Ochiltree, Ayrshire, in Scotland. She was born on the Fifth day of May, in 1756, at Corton, Ayr, Ayrshire, in Scotland. They were the parents of:

William Mearns II was born on the Thirty-first day of October, in 1801, at Sorn, Ayrshire, in Scotland and died just before 1860, at near Sparta, Washington County, in the State of Illinois. He was married to Margaret Findlay on the Twentieth day of June, in 1828, in Scotland. She was born on the Eighteenth day of May, in 1810, at Galston, Ayrshire, Scotland and died on the Mississippi River, going up to meet her husband and oldest son, James. She died and was put overboard, because it was against the law to land with a dead body on board, because of the chance of disease. When the river boat landed, there was no wife, but nine children of all ages.
