Families (Whitmore, Jane 1826)


Jane Whitmore was the daughter of Obadiah Whitmore and Elizabeth Van Riper. Obadiah Whitmore was born in 1799 in Vermont. Elizabeth Van Riper was born on June 13, 1805 in New York State. Jane was born in 1826 in Genesee County, in the state of New York. Jane’s family moved from Genesee County, New York State to Pennsylvania. Before 1842, Jane’s family moved from Pennsylvania to Sandusky, Erie County, Ohio.

Jane Whitmore married Isaac Walter Knapp on August 14, 1842, in Sandusky, Erie County, Ohio. Jane and Isaac moved to Michigan City, La Porte County, Indiana by 1844. Before 1846, they moved to Chesterton, Porter County, Indiana.

Isaac Walter Knapp and Jane Whitmore had nine children all together. The oldest of those was Mark Knapp. Mark was born on September 5, 1844 in Michigan City, La Porte County, Indiana. He married LiJanna Medora Sharp on April 18, 1871 in Porter County, Indiana. LiJanna was just called Anna. We don’t know what Mark did for a living. Mark died on March 14, 1937, in Wheatfield, Jasper County, Indiana. He was buried at Wheatfield Cemetery, Wheatfield, Jasper County, Indiana.

The second child of Isaac Walter Knapp and Jane Whitmore was Walter J. Knapp. He was born in 1846 in Porter County, Indiana. Walter, first married Mary Forbes in 1879. She was always called Polly. She was born in 1859. They were married in Porter County Indiana. Mary died in 1881, in Porter County, Indiana. Walter’s second marriage was to Ella Castleman, the widow of Andrew, Walter’s brother. Ella was born in 1861. Walter and Ella were married in Porter County, Indiana. Walter died on November 4, 1915 in Porter County, Indiana. Walter was buried in Chesterton Cemetery, Chesterton, Porter County, Indiana.

Andrew J. Knapp was the third child of Isaac Walter Knapp and Jane Whitmore. He was born in 1848 in Porter County, Indiana. Andrew married Ella Castleman in Porter County, Indiana. After Andrew died, Ella married his brother, Walter. Andrew was a member of the 147th Illinois, during the Civil War. Later, he contracted tuberculosis and died on February 18, 1883 in Porter County, Indiana. Andrew was buried at Chesterton Cemetery, Chesterton, Porter County, Indiana.

Isaac Walter Knapp and Jane Whitmore’s fourth child was Franklin Knapp. His entire life he was called Frank. Frank was born in 1851 in Porter County, Indiana. Frank did get married; but we have no other details. He died in 1950. That date is in question.

The fifth child of Isaac Walter Knapp and Jane Whitmore was Cornelius Knapp. His nickname was either Corny or Cory. Cornelius was born in 1853 in Illinois. We know nothing of his marriage, death or burial.

Orville Joseph Knapp was the sixth child of Isaac Walter Knapp and Jane Whitmore. Orville was sometimes called Joe. He was born on April 26, 1857 in Illinois. Orville married Sarah Sabrina Starkey on August 21, 1886 in Springfield, Greene County, Missouri. Sarah was known as Sally in her youth. When Orville was young, he worked for the railroad and traveled. It was a hard and dangerous job. He was later a butcher and a home builder. Orville could play a number of musical instruments. He died on April 2, 1916 in Springfield, Greene County, Missouri. Orville was buried at Hazelwood Cemetery, in Springfield, Greene County, Missouri.

Isaac Walter Knapp and Jane Whitmore’s seventh child was Lorenzo Knapp. He was called several names. Some of those were: Loren, Lorn and Lon. Lorenzo was born in 1860 in Illinois. We believe Lorenzo was married. But, we have no further knowledge of his life.

The eighth child of Isaac Walter Knapp and Jane Whitmore was Emily Knapp. She was called Em or Emmie for short. Emily was born in 1864 in Illinois. Nothing else of Emily’s life, marriage or death is known.

Elfie Knapp was the ninth child of Isaac Walter Knapp and Jane Whitmore. He was born in 1864 or 1865 in Westchester, Porter County, Indiana. We don’t know anything else of the life, of Elfie Knapp.

Jane Whitmore died on May 27, 1877 in Chesterton, Porter County, Indiana. She was buried at Chesterton Cemetery, Chesterton, Porter County, Indiana. Jane was fifty one years old when she died. She outlived her husband by four years.
