Families (Harris, Silas 1792)


Silas Harris was the son of Benjamin Harris and Rutha or Ruth A. Byars or Byers. Benjamin Harris was born in 1762, in Southampton County, Virginia. Ruth A. Byars was born in 1770 in Rutherford County, North Carolina. Silas was born on December 15, 1792 in Greenville, Greenville County, South Carolina.

Silas Harris married Jane Hill in 1812 in South Carolina. Jane hill was born in the Pendleton District in South Carolina. When the War of 1812 started, he enlisted. He became a Lieutenant and fought in many battles. Silas was discharged in 1814, at the end of the war.

Silas Harris and Jane Hill were the parents of at least two children that lived to adulthood. The first of those was Zachariah Harris. He was born on April 4, 1813 in the Pendleton District, in Anderson County, South Carolina or Greenville County, South Carolina. Zachariah married Almira Emily Hill on March 6, 1834 in Macoupin County, Illinois. He and Almira were the parents of four children. Zachariah died in 1841 in Geneva, Morgan County, Illinois. He was buried in Geneva, Morgan County, Illinois.

After Zachariah’s death Almira married Abraham Owen Smoot and moved to Salt Lake City, Salt Lake County, Utah.

Benjamin Harris was the second child born to Silas Harris and Jane Hill. Benjamin was born in 1815 in Tennessee. He married Mary Anne Williamson in 1835 in Montgomery County, Illinois or Macoupin County, Illinois. When the Civil War broke out, Benjamin enlisted in the Union Army. He fought in a few battles, before he was wounded. Benjamin was discharged after his hospitalization. He suffered from his injuries for the rest of his life. Benjamin and Mary Anne were the parents of eight children. He died in 1871 in Upper Alton, Madison County, Illinois. Benjamin was buried in Upper Alton, Madison County, Illinois. He was 56 years old, when he died.

Silas Harris and his wife and family had moved to Upper Alton, Madison County, Illinois. We don’t know when Jane Hill died or where she died. Silas died on September 25, 1845 in Upper Alton, Madison County, Illinois. He was buried in Upper Alton, Madison County, Illinois. We have no further knowledge of Jane Hill’s death or burial.
