Families (Johnson, Asa 1807)


Asa Johnson was the son of Samuel Johnson or Johnston and Sarah Pennington. Samuel Johnson was born in 1777 in Rowan County, North Carolina. Sarah Pennington was born on November 24, 1776 in Wilkes County or Ashe County, North Carolina. Asa Johnson was born on November 3, 1807 in Kentucky. Asa married Frances A. Bruce on September 14, 1829 in Sumner County, Tennessee. Asa was a stone cutter by trade. A stone cutter would cut stones, for buildings that needed to last, for a long time. At the beginning of the Civil War, Asa joined the Union Army on June 15, 1861. He was a member of Company D, Osage Regiment. He fought in several battles. Asa was wounded and honorably discharged on December 20, 1861. Later, Asa Johnson and his family moved to Quanah, Hardeman County, Texas. Most of the descendants of Asa Johnson have heard that he or his children are the cousins of President Andrew Johnson. We find no evidence of this, other than hear say. The possibility of a relationship, would need to be, much further back.

Asa Johnson and Frances A. Bruce were the parents of at least six children. The first child, born to the couple was George Harland or Harlan Johnson. He was born on the Twenty-third day of November 1843, in the Town of Stark, Township 37, Range 20, Hickory County, Missouri. He was married to Eliza Harriett. She was born in 1842 or 1843.  George Harland Johnson and his wife were the parents of ten or eleven children: Andrew Thomas Johnson, with no birth date, Sarah F. or M. Johnson 1867, Mary E. Johnson 1868, Daniel C. Johnson 1871, Thomas A. Johnson 1872, William A. Johnson 1874, Joana Johnson 1877, Louisa Johnson 1877, Viola H. Johnson 1878 and 1881, and Hugh L. Johnson 1881. Viola is listed twice. She may have died and another child was given that name. George Harlan served in the United States Army from 1861 to the Twentieth day of July, in 1865. His profession was that of Engineer, then that of the Physician. George Harlan Johnson was the President of the Local Medical Society, in 1909. He died on the Twenty-fifth day of January, in 1933. George Harlan Johnson was buried at Memorial Park, Quanah, Hardeman County, in the State of Texas.  He was about ninety years old, when he died. We have no further information about the life, death or burial of George Harland Johnson.

William J. Johnson was the second child, born to Asa Johnson and Frances A. Bruce. He was born in 1846 in Township 37, Range 20, Hickory County, Missouri. As a youth, William was called Billy. We don’t know who he married or when they were married. We don’t know, if William and his wife were the parents, of any children. He died in 1864 in Township 37, Range 20, Hickory County, Missouri. William was buried in Township 37, Range 20, Hickory County, Missouri. We don’t know, how William died. He was about eighteen years old, when he died. We have no additional details of William J. Johnson’s life, death or burial.

The third child, born to Asa Johnson and Frances A. Johnson was Amanda Frances Johnson. She was born on January 29, 1848 in Township 37, Range 20, Hickory County, Missouri. For most of her life, Amanda was called Mandy. Amanda was a midwife, by profession. She married Ezra Johnson on January 25, 1866 near Hermitage, in Hickory County, Missouri. Ezra Johnson was born on May 14, 1842 near Ava, Douglas County, Missouri. Ezra and Amanda were the parents, of at least eight children. Later, the Johnson family moved to Claremore, Rogers County, Oklahoma. Amanda died on May, 19, 1919 in Claremore, Rogers County, Oklahoma. She was buried at Woodlawn Cemetery, in Claremore, Rogers County, Olkahoma. Amanda’s husband, Ezra out lived her by ten years. We have no more knowledge of the life, death or burial of Amanda Frances Johnson.

Asa Johnson and Frances A. Bruce’s fourth child, was Asa Thomas Johnson. He was born on October 17, 1850 in Township 37, Range 20, in Hickory County, Missouri. Asa was a doctor and a surgeon. As a youth, Asa Thomas was called Tommy. As an adult, he was known as Thomas. We don’t know who he married, or where they were married. We don’t know, if Asa Thomas and his wife were the parents, of any children. Asa died on March 1, 1901 in Marshall, Saline County, Missouri. He was buried at Ridge Park Cemetery, in Marshall, Saline County, Missouri. Plot: Grave lot 5, Section 5. Asa was fifty years old, when he died. We have no further information about Asa Thomas Johnson’s life, death or burial.

Sanders or Saunders W. Johnson was the fifth child, born to Asa Johnson and Frances A. Bruce. Sanders was sometimes listed as Samuel W. Johnson in the U. S. Census. Sanders’ name could have been Samuel, as Asa’s father was named Samuel. However, Sander’s nickname was Sand. We believe Sanders is the correct name. He was born in 1852 in Township 37, Range 20, Hickory County, Missouri. We don’t know who he married, or when they were married. We don’t know if Sanders, and his wife were the parents, of any children. He died in 1931. Sanders was about seventy nine years old, when he died. We have no additional details of the life, death or burial of Sander or Saunders W. Johnson.

Asa Johnson died on March 8, 1891, in Quanah, Hardeman County, Texas. He died of pneumonia. He was buried at Quanah Memorial Park, in Quanah, Hardeman County, Texas. Asa’s burial Plot: OC, 29, D, 02. Asa was eighty three years old, when he died. His wife, Frances A. Bruce out lived him by almost three years. We have no more knowledge of Asa Johnson’s life, death or burial.
