Families (Knapp, John 1796)


John Knapp was the son of Benjamin Knapp and Katherine Weigel. Sometimes her name was spelled Catherine Wigle. The Knapps were of English decent. Before that, German. The Weigel family was of German decent. Benjamin Knapp was born in 1761 in New York State. Katherine Weigel was born in 1759 in Little York, York County, Pennsylvania. Little York in now just York. The city was called Little York; because it was in the County of York. John Knapp was born in 1796 the state of New York. He was called Johnny, as a youth. John was a farmer, by trade. He married Margaret Jones in 1816 in Essex County, Ontario, Canada. Margaret Jones was born in 1797 in Essex County, Ontario, Canada.

John Knapp and Margaret Jones were the parents of Thirteen children. The first of those was James Murphy Knapp. He was born in 1817 in Essex County, Ontario, Canada. We don’t know who James married, or when they were married. We don’t know, if James and his wife, were the parents of any children. At the beginning of the Civil War, he enlisted in the Union Army. James fought in many battles. He was a member of the Iowa 7th Cavalry, Company C. When James’ father, John Knapp died on January 9,1852 in Porter County, Indiana; James was the administrator of the estate. James Murphy Knapp died July 9, 1892 in Iversen Landing, Mendocino County, California. He was buried at Iversen Landing, Mendocino County, California. We have no other details on the life, death or burial of James Murphy Knapp.

Margaret Knapp was the second child born to John Knapp and Margaret Jones. She was born in 1819 in Essex County, Ontario, Canada. Margaret was named for her mother, Margaret Jones. Margaret died in 1821 in Essex County, Ontario, Canada. She was only about the age of two years old, when she died. We don’t know how she died. Margaret Knapp was buried in Essex County, Ontario, Canada. We have no additional information of Margaret Knapp’s life, death or burial.

The third child born to John Knapp and Margaret Jones was Isaac Walter Knapp. He was born in 1821 in Essex County, Ontario, Canada. Isaac married Jane Whitmore on August 14, 1842 in Fremont, Sandusky County, Ohio. Jane was born in 1826 in Genesee County, New York. Isaac enlisted in the Union Army, at the start of the Civil War. Isaac mustered in on August 16, 1862. He was part of the 73rd. Indiana Infantry, Company E. Isaac fought in a number of battles. He was wounded in battle, from cannon fire; and suffered from those wounds, for the rest of his life. Issac’s wounds never healed because of gangrene. Isaac was a farmer, by trade. He and Jane were the parents of nine children. Isaac died on May 27, 1873 in Chesterton, Porter County, Indiana. He was buried at the Chesterton Cemetery, in Chesterton, Porter County, Indiana. Isaac Walter Knapp was fifty one years old, when he died. His wife, Jane Whitmore outlived him by about four years.

John Knapp and Margaret Jones’s fourth child was Elizabeth Knapp. She was born in 1823 in Essex County, Ontario, Canada. We don’t know who she married, or when they were married. We don’t know if Elizabeth and her husband, were the parents, of any children. We have no other records of the life, death or burial of Elizabeth Knapp.

Harriett Knapp was the fifth child born to John Knapp and Margaret Jones. She was born in 1824 in Essex County, Ontario, Canada. Harriett went by the nickname of Hattie, all of her life. She may have been the twin of Henrietta Knapp; who was born the same year. We don’t know who she married, or when they were married. We don’t know if Harriett and her husband were the parents of any children. She died in 1862. We have no additional information of Harriett Knapp’s life, death or burial.

The sixth child born to John Knapp and Margaret Jones was Henrietta. She was born in 1824 in Essex County, Ontario, Canada. She may have been the twin of Harriett Knapp; who was born the same year. Henrietta married Davidson Patton in 1848 in LaPorte Township, LaPorte County, Indiana. Henrietta was the second wife of Davidson. He was a mason, by trade. The Patton family appears in the 1860 U.S. Census. Davidson and Henrietta were the parents of four children: John 1849, Caroline 1852, Flora 1854, Louisa 1855. We have no further details of the life, death or burial of Henrietta Knapp. As, we look at these two twin sisters, it is possible, that they were the same person. If, that is the case, the Aunt Hattie, spoken of by the family was another Aunt Hattie, than Harriett.

John Knapp and Margaret Jones’s seventh child was John Randolph Knapp. He was born in September of 1826 in Essex County, Ontario, Canada. As the Civil War began, John joined the Union Army. He was a member of the 6th California Infantry, Company A. John fought in a number of battles. We don’t know who he married, or where they were married. We don’t know if John, and his wife were the parents of any children. We found John on the 1880 U.S. Census, in Douglas City, Butler County, Kansas. At the time, he was without wife and children. He died in 1910. We have no other records on John Randolph Knapp’s life, death or burial.

Anne Knapp was the eighth child born to John Knapp and Margaret Jones. Anne went by the nickname of Nancy, though out her life. She was born in 1828 in Essex County, Ontario, Canada. Anne or Nancy married a man named Morgan. We don’t know his first name. We don’t know if Anne, and her husband were the parents of any children. Anne died in 1860. She was about thirty two years old, when she died. We have no further knowledge of the life, death or burial of Anne/Nancy Knapp.

The ninth child born to John Knapp and Margaret Jones was Hiram J. Knapp. He was born in 1830 in Essex County, Ontario, Canada. We don’t know who Hiram married, or when they were married. We don’t know if Hiram and his wife were the parents, of any children. The story that we have about Hiram is that, he was a partner in a riverboat. He and his partner got into an argument. The partner stabbed him and threw him overboard. He died. We have no additional information of Hiram J. Knapp’s life, death or burial.

John Knapp and Margaret Jones’s tenth child was Cornelius Knapp. He was born in 1832 in Essex County, Ontario, Canada. He married Massey A. Elliott on November 17, 1858 in Adair County, Missouri. Massey was born in January of 1844 in Ohio. She died on November 28, 1900 in Cowlitz County, Washington State. Massey A. Elliott was buried in Cowlitz County, Washington State. She was fifty six years old, when she died. Cornelius died on November 28, 1900 in Cowlitz County, Washington State. He was buried in Cowlitz County, Washington State. Cornelius Knapp was sixty eight years old, when he died. Cornelius and Massey probably died together. We don’t know, how or why they died. We have no other details of the life, death or burial of Cornelius Knapp.

Susannah E. Knapp was the eleventh child born to John Knapp and Margaret Jones. She was born in 1834 in Fremont, Sandusky, County, Ohio. She was called Susan or Suzie, as a child. Susannah appears in the 1860 U.S. Census, living with her sister’s family, Davidson and Henrietta Patton, in LaPorte Township, LaPorte County, Indiana. We don’t know who Susannah married, or when they were married. We don’t know if Susannah, and her husband were the parents of any children. We have no further information about Susannah E. Knapp’s life, death or burial.

The twelfth child born to John Knapp and Margaret Jones was a boy. He was born in 1836 in Fremont, Sandusky County, Ohio. This child died as an infant. He may not have lived long enough, to receive a name. This infant, died in Sandusky, Erie County, Ohio. We don’t know, how he died. He was buried in Fremont, Sandusky County, Ohio.

John Knapp and Margaret Jones’s thirteenth child was William Henry Norris Knapp. He was born on December 19, 1838 in Fremont, Sandusky County, Ohio. William’s nickname was Billy, as a youth. He enlisted, as soon as the Civil War started. William was a member of the 5th Iowa Infantry, Company H. William fought in a good many battles. We don’t know who William married or when they were married. We know William and his wife were the parents of some children. We have no other details of the life, death or burial of William Henry Norris Knapp.

Thomas Knapp was the fourteenth child born to John Knapp and Margaret Jones. He was born in 1840 in Fremont, Sandusky County, Ohio. Thomas died as an infant before 1842. We don’t know, how he died. He died in Fremont, Sandusky County, Ohio. Thomas was buried in Fremont, Sandusky County, Ohio.

The fifteenth child born to John Knapp and Margaret Jones was Peter Jones Knapp. He was born on June 2, 1842 in Fremont, Sandusky County, Ohio. Peter joined the Union Army, when the Civil War broke out. He was a member of the 5th Iowa Infantry, Company H. He fought in many battles. We don’t know who he married, or where they were married. We know, Peter and his wife were the parents of some children. He died in 1924. We don’t know how he died. We have no further information of Peter Jones Knapp’s life, death or burial.

John Knapp died on January 9, 1852 in Chesterton, Porter County, Indiana. We don’t know, how he died. He was buried at the Chesterton Cemetery, Chesterton, Porter County, Indiana. John was fifty six, when he died. His wife, Margaret Jones was sixty three years old, when she died. John’s wife, Margaret out lived him by eleven years. We have no other details of the life, death or burial of John Knapp. James Murphy Knapp was the administrator of his father’s Estate.
