Lanterman, Polly Anne


Polly Anne Lanterman was the daughter of William Applegate Lanterman and Eliza Luman.  William Applegate Lanterman was born on November 26, 1815 in Fleming County, Kentucky.  Eliza Luman was born 1820 in Lewis County, Kentucky.  Polly Anne’s name at birth was Mary Anne Lanterman.  Polly Anne was born on June 3, 1840, in Fort Russell Township, Madison County, Illinois.

Polly Anne Lanterman married William Anderson Smith on February 8, 1860 in Moro, Madison County, Illinois.  Polly Anne was a school teacher by profession.  She, and her husband William were farmers.  When William and Polly Anne decided to sell the farm and retire; they moved to Sapulpa, Creek County Olkahoma.  The Lantermans did everything they could to help and improve the town of Sapulpa and it’s people.  They donated a stable to use as the first school house.  Polly Anne served as the first school teacher until a permanent one could be found.  She also formed a ladies aid society to help the poor.  Polly Anne and her husband built the first hotel.  Now, the hotel is an apartment building.  Polly Anne was her husband, William’s secretary, in business and when he became the first post master of the county.  They created the first postal routes in Creek County.  William and Polly Anne established many firsts in Sapulpa, Creek County, and Oklahoma.

William Anderson Smith and Polly Anne Lanterman had 12 children.  The first child was Margarett Eliza Smith.  She was born in 1861 in Fort Russell Township, Madison County, Illinois.  Margarett died as an infant in Fort Russell Township, Madison County, Illinois.  She was buried in Fort Russell Township, Madison County, Illinois.

The second child born to William Anderson Smith and Polly Anne Lanterman was Ruth Anne Smith.  She was born on October 22, 1862, in Moro, Madison County, Illinois.  Ruth Anne went by Ruth Annie all of her life.  She married Benjamin Pearson Harris in 1880 in Bethalto, Madison County, Illinois.  Ruth Annie was a school teacher in the  school in Bethalto. The principal at the school was Benjamin.  Ruth Annie’s father didn’t want her to marry Benjamin. They decided to get married anyway.  Her mother helped her.  After getting married they moved to Willow Springs, Howell County, Missouri.  Benjamin and Ruth Annie worked there, teaching and farming.  Their oldest child was  born in Willow Springs.  Then, they moved to Springfield, Greene County, Missouri. They bought land on the North side of town and began farming.  The couple had seven children in all.  Ruth Annie died on May 21, 1937 in Springfield, Greene County, Missouri.  She was buried at the National Cemetery, in Springfield, Greene County, Missouri.

Clara Estella Smith was the third child born to William Anderson Smith and Polly Anne Lanterman.  She was born on May 24, 1864 in Moro, Madison County, Illinois.  Clara died as an infant December 20, 1865 in Moro, Madison County, Illinois.  She was buried in Moro, Madison County,  Illinois.

William Anderson Smith and Polly Anne Lanterman’s fourth child was Fredrick Josiah Anderson Smith.  He was born on July 6, 1866 in Moro, Madison County, Illinois.  Fredrick went by the nickname Fred all of his life.  He married Anna E.  We don’t know anything else about her.  We have no further record of Fredrick or his family.

The fifth Child of William Anderson Smith and Polly Anne Lanterman was Lewis James Smith.  He was born on January 6, 1868 in Moro, Madison County,  Illinois.  Lewis did Marry, but his wife’s name is unknown.  He died in 1908 in California.  Lewis, was also buried in California.  We know nothing else of  Lewis’ life or his family.

William Norman Smith was the sixth child of William Anderson Smith and Polly Anne Lanterman.  He was born on September 24, 1869 in Lexington, Lafayette County, Missouri.  William was a clerk by trade.  We don’t know if he married.  We have no further information concerning where William died or was buried.

William Anderson Smith and Polly Anne Lanterman’s seventh child was Joseph Edward Smith.  He was just called Joe.  Joseph was born on February 26, 1872 in Moro, Madison County, Illinois.  He was a farmer for his short life.  Joseph wasn’t married.  In 1890 Joe drowned in a lake near Moro, Madison County, Illinois.  He was buried in Moro, Madison County, Illinois.

The Eighth child of William Anderson Smith and Polly Anne Lanterman was Martha Letitia Smith.  Martha always went by Hattie.  She was born on January 4, 1874 in Moro, Madison County,  Illinois.  We think Hattie was born in 1874; but she always fibbed about her age, so we don’t know for sure.  Hattie was married to McKellop, in Sapulpa, Creek County, Oklahoma.  We don’t know what her husband’s first name was.  Hattie died in 1858 in Sapulpa, Creek County, Oklahoma. She was buried in Sapulpa,

Creek County, Oklahoma.

Franklin Smith was the ninth child of William Anderson Smith and Polly Anne Lanterman.  He was always called Frank.  Frank was born on April 10, 1876 in Moro, Madison County, Illinois.  Frank married Jennie in Sapulpa, Creek County, Oklahoma. We have no record of Jennie’s last name.  They had a daughter, named Virginia in Sapulpa, Creek County, Oklahoma.  Frank was a butcher and a postman to help his father, the post master.  He died in Sapulpa, Creek County, Olkahoma.  Frank was buried in Sapulpa, Creek County, Oklahoma.

William Anderson Smith and Polly Anne Lanterman’s tenth child was Elizabeth Smith. Her nickname was Lizzie.  Elizabeth was born on April 30, 1878 in Moro, Madison County, Illinois.  Lizzie died as an infant on May 24, 1878 in Moro, Madison County, Illinois.  She was also buried in Moro, Madison County, Illinois.

The Eleventh child of  William Anderson Smith and Polly Anne Lanterman was John Henry Smith.  John was born on March 26, 1880 in Moro, Madison County, Illinois. he died as an infant on August 4, 1881 in Moro, Madison County, Illinois.  John was buried in Moro, Madison County, Illinois.

Chester Marshall Smith was the twelfth child of  William Anderson Smith and Polly Anne Lanterman.  He was born December 14, 1881 in Moro, Madison County, Illinois. He married Dora in Sapulpa, Creek County, Oklahoma.  We don’t know Dora’s surname. Chester was a carpenter by trade.  Chester also helped his father by working as a postman.  In 1902 he drowned in Sapulpa, Creek County, Oklahoma.  Chester was buried in Sapulpa, Creek County, Oklahoma.

In 1889 William and Polly Anne moved their family from Moro, Madison County, Illinois to Sapulpa, Creek County, Oklahoma.  Four of their children had died as infants.  Five of their children were already out of the home.  Three of their children went with them to Oklahoma.

Polly Anne Lanterman died in 1906, in Sapulpa, Creek County, Oklahoma.  She was buried in Sapulpa, Creek County, Oklahoma.  Polly Anne was sixty six years old, when she died.  William, her husband, out lived her by seven years.
